Type Locality and Naming

The type section is near Yuhong woods in Hongsha in the vicinity of Sanya, Hainan Island. The Yuhong Fm was named by He Yangzhi et al. in 1980. Zeng Qingluan et al. (1992) restudied the the Yuhong Fm, and suggested that the Yuhong Fm is between the Shatang Fm and Jianling Fm. At the same time, they redefined the base of this formation.

Synonym: (榆红组)


Lithology and Thickness

The Yuhong Fm is 1831-1860 m thick, and is composed of light gray or light red very thick-bedded polymictic conglomerate intercalated with pebble-bearing quartz sandstone.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The bottom is seen in Luhuitou in the vicinity of Sanya, and is represented by yellowish gray quartz siltstone which is distinguished easily from the gray silty claystone at the top of the underlying Shatang Fm

Upper contact

The top is exposed at Qinglingpo in Sanya City, and is characterized by pebbly sandstone which is different from the quartz-bearing silty hydromica claystone at the base of the overlying Jianling Fm

Regional extent

The Yuhong Fm is exposed in Sanya.
